Rescheduled Alumni Golf Tournament raises $20K for Greenhill Scholarship
The second annual Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Golf Tournament took place Saturday, May 16, at Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Texas.
Although rained out on the original tournament day during Alumni Weekend, rainy weather could not keep golfers from the award-winning course a second time. The 25 teams were made up of area judges, law school alumni, faculty, students and other legal professionals. The tournament raised $20,000 for the Chief Justice Joe Greenhill scholarship, an annual award that is given to a Texas Wesleyan law student who plans to work in public service and who displays professional integrity and excels academically.

The winning team consisted of Texas Wesleyan University Senior Vice President William Bleibdrey, Trustees Mark Walker and Bob Lansford, and Pat Evans. Second place went to the team of Justin Huston, Mike Wurtz, Greg Hargrove and Scott Hargrove from McDonald Sanders, P.C., a tournament sponsor. Blake Hedgecock ’00, Richard Johnson ’00, Jason Cantrell and Matthew Germany ’99 fielded the third place team.
Contest winners included Judge Andy Chatham, Tom McKenzie ’94, Richard Johnson ’00, Trustee Mark Walker, David Mykel, Judge Tim Murphy and Jay Zeleskey. Prizes included luxury suites at Texas Motor Speedway and Lone Star Park, home plate tickets for the Texas Rangers, and badges to the Colonial and Byron Nelson golf tournaments, just to name a few.

The Chief Justice Joe Greenhill scholarship was initiated in 2008, in conjunction with a donation to Texas Wesleyan School of Law of several pieces of the former Texas Supreme Court Justice’s memorabilia. The golf tournament, an event that has become an annual tradition as part of the alumni reunion weekend, was officially named in honor of Justice Greenhill in 2008.
