Friends, family and colleagues of Jeff Kubes ’03 gathered at Billy Bob’s Texas on Thursday, Oct. 29, for Cowtown Double Down Casino Night. The event raised more than $19,000 for an endowed scholarship in Kubes’ name, who passed away unexpectedly last year.

More than 100 people attended Casino Night, including Texas State Senator Wendy Davis, Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns, the Honorable Ralph Swearingen ’94, and the Honorable Joe Kubes, Tarrant County Constable. Organized by the Texas Wesleyan School of Law Alumni Association, the Kubes family, and the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association, this event will be hosted annually by family, friends and colleagues. Attendees played blackjack, craps, and Texas Hold’em in a fitting tribute to Kubes, who loved playing poker. Generous members of the community donated door prizes and silent auction items to help raise money for a scholarship endowment named in Jeff’s honor.

Rick Kubes, Jeff’s father, wrote afterwards, “It truly is a blessing to have all our family ties so physically and emotionally close to Texas Wesleyan Law School and the legal profession in Fort Worth. The interaction between us all makes life that much more exciting and meaningful. We all know that Jeff is smiling down on us and blessing us all for expressing ‘the better angels of our nature’ between ourselves, him and society at large.”
Jeff Kubes graduated from Southwest High School and graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in political science from Texas Tech University. After earning his J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University, he worked first for JP Morgan Chase Trust Department, and then for the Perry law firm in Fort Worth, specializing in probate and estate planning. He served on the board of directors for the Tarrant County Young Lawyers Association and was accepted into the Eldon B. Mahon Inn of Court. He and his wife Curran ’04, also an attorney, volunteered in the annual Tarrant County National Adoption Day and both were very active in the Fort Worth community at large.
Alumni, friends and colleagues turned out to honor Jeff's memory and support the scholarship endowment.

As a graduate of Texas Wesleyan School of Law and as a member of the Fort Worth-Tarrant County Young Lawyers Board of Directors, Kubes knew the importance of law, education and service, and he utilized his experience to encourage and inspire others to achieve. “When you looked around the room at the event, you saw smiles, heard laughter and felt a true sense of family. We are delighted to partner with the Kubes family and the Tarrant County Young Lawyers in creating this scholarship endowment to honor Jeff, as well as the many alumni who emulate the true spirit and passion for serving others in our community,” said Casey Dyer.
