The Texas Wesleyan University School of Law Alumni Association is pleased to announce the Chief Justice Joe Greenhill annual alumni golf tournament. In addition, Texas Wesleyan University School of Law is pleased to announce a scholarship in former Chief Justice Greenhill’s honor to recognize him for his many contributions to the legal profession and for his generous support of the law school.
Proceeds of the 2008 alumni association golf tournament, which is also being named in honor of the former Chief Justice, will go to the Chief Justice Joe Greenhill Scholarship. The golf tournament has become an annual part of the alumni reunion weekend each April.
“We are honored to be able to recognize Chief Justice Greenhill with a scholarship that will benefit a deserving student, and I am proud to celebrate his contributions to the legal profession,” Interim Dean Cynthia Fountaine said. “I am delighted that our alumni community has decided to honor this great Texas jurist and lawyer by giving his name to the golf tournament.”
Former Chief Justice Greenhill has been active in the Texas legal profession for many years, including 25 years on the Supreme Court of Texas, the last ten of which he served as Chief Justice. He was first assistant attorney general of Texas under Price Daniel, who was later governor of Texas, and in 1950 was one of the co-founders of Graves, Dougherty & Greenhill in Austin. Former Chief Justice Greenhill was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in 1957, and in 1958 he was elected to the Court. He currently practices law as a consultant for attorneys who have cases in the Texas Supreme Court and other appellate courts. He is the author of many landmark opinions that are frequently cited in Texas courts.
