Celebrating a successful year of fundraising and support for the law school, the Texas Wesleyan University School of Law Alumni Association held its first donor recognition reception on May 15.
Donors were recognized for their contributions to various campaigns such as the Law Review Endowment Fund and the Annual Fund. The 2007-08 year has seen a striking increase in support of these campaigns. In comparison to the 2006-07 year, annual fund donations tripled, with an additional 39 new donor contributions, and faculty and staff donations doubled.
“The entire law school community has shown a tremendous amount of support to our campaigns this year,” Interim Dean Cynthia Fountaine said. “The generosity of our donors will go a long way in supporting the law school and its students, and we are so pleased to recognize these individuals for their contributions.”
The Law Review Endowment Fund received additional support this year in the form of the Judy and Stephen Alton Challenge Gift. The Altons pledged to match gifts to the Law Review Endowment Fund, dollar for dollar, up to $10,000. This goal was met and exceeded, bringing in a total of $20,000 for the fund. The Altons then renewed their challenge and offered to meet each new donation with one dollar for every two donated, up to an additional $5,000.
Charter members of the Burger Society were also recognized at the reception. Named in honor of former Chief Justice Warren E. Burger, of the United States Supreme Court, the Burger Society was created to raise scholarships for evening law students of the highest caliber. Charles Noteboom, of the Noteboom Law Firm, is the chairman of the Warren E. Burger Society of the National Center for State Courts. Noteboom presented the charter members with limited edition portraits of Chief Justice Burger.
Finally, donors to the Counselors and Barristers Clubs were recognized for their contributions to the annual fund. The Counselors Club recognizes new graduates less than five years out of law school who donate $100, and the Barristers Club recognizes those who donate $1,000 or more. Each of these clubs allows members access to special law school events, and donors were recognized with a plaque commemorating their contribution.
In recognition of the generous support of its major donors, the alumni association plans to continue formally recognizing its contributors at similar events in the future.
